Tips on How to Use Derma Roller for Hair Loss at Home

Losing 50-100 strands of hair in a day is normal and you will probably not notice any significant changes. Well, new hair grows to replace your lost strands. Once time, my friend tells me:

“If I want to knock a story off the front page, I just change my hairstyle”

At this point, I realize how important her hair is to her. However, hair loss is bound to occur. This usually happens when the cycle of shedding and replacing is disrupted.

Again, it will occur when scar tissues replace hair follicles. Over the years, I have to come to learn some about conditions that cause hair loss and these include hormonal changes, medications, family history, and some medical conditions.

Whatever the cause, you will develop a bald scalp that is unattractive to many people. Some people can live with it but others look for ways to cover it. Therefore, like many would say:

“The most important thing you can have- next to talent, of course- is your hairdresser”

If baldness runs in your family history, you may want to consider various treatments to prevent or treat hair loss. Derma rolling is among the effective therapies for hair loss.

Derma roller treatment is also referred to as micro needling, collagen induction therapy or skin needling. A derma roller is a handheld device that has many tiny needles.

The number of needles varies between 90 and 540 needles depending on the brand. The length of the needles also varies from one device to another.

However, the size of needles range from 0.25mm to 3mm. Skin needling was initially used to treat skin care conditions.

How Does Derma Rolling Work?

Well, you hair grows based on genes that stimulate growth of new hair cells. The development of these new hair cells occurs in the hair follicles, which are tiny openings on the skin surface and on your scalp too.

In a micro needling treatment, you will roll your derma roller over your scalp. Its needles prickle your skin tissues and cause tiny wounds. If you are considering this treatment over a wig or a cap, be prepared for a tingling feeling and a painful sensation.

However, the sensation is better than a baldhead. Yes, God made a few perfect heads… on the others he put hair!!

Your body will respond to the tiny wounds by releasing chemicals such as the human growth hormone to produce new skin and hair cells in the wounded area.

In addition, derma rolling will stimulate blood circulation and increase the supply of nutrients to your hair follicles needed for the development of new hair cells.

1. CHOOSING A DERMA ROLLER

One important factor to consider when buying a derma roller is the size of the needle. The right size of the needle depends on the amount of hair that is left on your scalp.

Shorter needles are more effective when using derma roller treatment for your hair loss. You can use a derma roller whose needles are between 0.2mm and 0.5mm when combining skin needling with other products.

Use it every day to increase the absorption of the complementary products. However, use dermal roller daily only if your scalp can tolerate daily treatment.

Using two rollers is advisable especially when you are using other products in the treatment. The rollers should have needles of different lengths. You can choose a second derma roller with 0.5 to 1.5m and use it once in a week or once in a month.

The purpose of the second roller will be to stimulate production of growth hormones while the first increases absorption.

2. How to use a Derma Roller at Home

After learning how to use a derma roller for hair loss, you may be too excited to get started immediately. However:

  • do not forget to read the manual in the device package

Each manufacturer gives specific instructions on how to assemble and use the device. The first step is to wet your hair so that it is not entangled in the roller during treatment.

Apply your hair restoration product on the treatment area and massage thoroughly. Ensure that you cover all the areas. Roll the dermal roller over the treatment area starting from your hairline all the way to the back of your head. Do this in front of a mirror to ensure that you cover all the areas.

Roll the device about 10-15 times on each area to increase absorption of the hair regeneration products.

  • We recommend repeating the process to ensure that every area is covered

You can roll three to four times in different directions, that is, horizontally, vertically and diagonally.

  • Do not apply a lot of pressure when rolling because it does not improve results

Instead, it causes ugly needle marks, irritation, and scratches on your scalp. Spray the area with a restoration spray after treatment and massage it thoroughly into your scalp.

3. COMPLEMENTARY PRODUCTS

ent works best when combined with products that prevent hair loss and stimulate hair regeneration. These include copper peptide, minoxidil, and Rogaine. Minoxidil rejuvenates inactive hair follicles, which reduces hair loss and stimulates the development of new hair cells.

You can use a derma roller before or after applying minoxidil. Start with 2% concentration of minoxidil because a higher concentration may irritate your skin. You can increase the amount to 5% gradually.

Copper peptide promotes the development of hair follicles and this leads to hair growth. Rogaine inhibits the effects of DHT that a leading cause of hair loss. You need it? Then you got to be patient about the process, it is the only way to that perfect look on your hair.

Additional Tips on Using a Derma Roller for Hair Loss

Tip #1

YOU NEED MORE THAN ONE TREATMENT

Derma rolling stimulates hair growth. However, do not expect instant results. You must apply the treatment consistently for several months. If you are looking for a quick fix for hair loss, a derma roller is not your best choice.

Complementary products such as minoxidil have a temporal effect on hair follicles. You must apply them continually and combine them with skin needling to stimulate hair growth.

Tip #2

USE MINOXIDIL PRODUCTS SPARINGLY

An overdose of minoxidil causes skin irritation. Read the instructions on the package and learn the side effects before applying the product. Start with a low concentration (2%) as explained above.

The alcohol content in minoxidil may cause itchiness, dryness, or irritation depending on your skin tolerance. Do not use a dermal roller with needles longer than 0.5mm when using minoxidil.

Longer needles will cause the product to penetrate deep into your scalp, which increases your risk of suffering side effects.

Do not allow minoxidil to spill over to your face unless if you want to end up with thick facial hair. It will stimulate growth of facial hair – you definitely do not want that experience.

Tip #3

CONSIDER ALTERNATIVE HAIR GROWTH PRODUCTS

Our guide recommends minoxidil, Rogaine, and copper peptide as complementary products when using a roller. You can explore other products that stimulate hair growth especially natural oils.

Other complementary products that you can use include lavender oil, castor oil, and onion. If you are unsure about your skin reaction to these products, apply a small amount on a hidden surface and leave it on all day.

Tip #4

GIVE YOUR SCALP A BREAK

can use a derma roller for hair loss with short needles everyday to increase the absorption of hair growth products. However, it is important to give your scalp a break of a day or two in a week, or haven’t you heard that too much of something is poisonous?

Here is where you apply such knowledge, ah!

You can create a treatment schedule where you skip a day after applying the treatment. Remember that the treatment takes several months to yield results. Overdoing it may irritate your skin especially if you are using minoxidil.

Tip #5

YOUR GROWTH CYCLE AFFECTS YOUR RESULTS

Hair follicles go through three stages of growth that include anagen stage, catagen stage, and telogen stage. At the anagen stage, hair follicles produce new hair cells for 2-5 years. The period may extend to 7 years.

At the catagen stage, follicles do not produce new cells for about 10 days. Your hair falls from follicles at the telogen stage and the follicles remain inactive for three months.

You may not experience any significant results if you apply the derma rolling at the catagen and telogen stages. Additional factors that influence hair growth include your diet, level of stress, and genetics.

No form of treatment will stimulate hair growth where you are experiencing high levels of stress or feeding on poor diet.
